Britain Bans Biltong | ||||
Visitors from Southern Africa to the UK will no longer be allowed to pack biltong or dry wors for friends and family. With the implementation of the "If In Doubt - Leave It Out" media campaign for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, the UK has clamped down on all animal products to the country.
Transgressors of the ban could be fined up to £ 1,000 (approximately N$ 14,000) or be liable for prosecution. Visitors are furthermore warned that the ban includes vacuum packed meat products and that 'meat patrols' have been implemented for flights arriving from South Africa. Other countries specifically targeted are Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh and China. The security measure is the result of sensitivity to possible pests that could be brought to the island via food parcels. |
